SKOVRAN SISTER MARY EDWARD, OSB Dec. 8, 1928 - March 1, 2018 The funeral is to be one expressing the joy of meeting God ... I am ready. These words were written in Sister Mary Edward's Five Wishes. For her, God was always present, and she looked forward to the day she would see God's loving face. That day came Thursday evening, March 1, 2018 when with great faith and a willing spirit, she quietly slipped into the loving arms of the God she faithfully served. The last sibling of 13 children born to John and Mary Ann (Bobko) Skovran, Elizabeth (Betty) Andrea grew up in Pittsburgh with the nickname Sunshine because of her cheerful smile and blue eyes. In December 1947, she entered the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh and the following year received the name Sister Mary Edward, in honor of her brother, Edward, who was killed in WWII. She served 38 of her ministry years as teacher, principal and assistant principal in the Pittsburgh, Greensburg and Youngstown Dioceses. She later worked in the Benedictine business office and in Benedictine Senior Center as Day Care Assistant and Nutrition Program Director. In recent days, in her friendly way, she ministered to the people at the Life Pittsburgh Green Center. At the time of her 50th Jubilee, she described herself as being interested in people, a good, concerned listener and an advocate for the elderly and down-trodden. Friendly, good-hearted, a life-long learner, with a compassionate concern for others, she described her Benedictine life as most fulfilling." Her advice for women interested in religious life was "Follow the promptings of your heart and be willing to go the extra mile without counting the cost." She lived with a Benedictine heart, and even as she dealt with the challenges of hearing and vision loss, loved being in the midst of whatever was happening. She wants to be remembered as being cheerful and always grateful for the blessings of God. In addition to her Benedictine Sisters, Sister Mary Edward is survived by nieces, nephews and their families. Services will be at Saint Benedict Monastery, 3526 Bakerstown Rd., Bakerstown, PA Tuesday, March 6: Viewing 2:00-4:45 and 6:00-7:00 p.m., followed by Vigil service; Wednesday, March 7: Viewing 1:00-4:30. Funeral 5:00 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by KASPER/HAHN FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
