
BURKART MILTON W., Ph.D. Of Point Breeze, on Monday, February 24, 2014, age 91. Beloved husband of Patricia K. Crumrine, M.D. and the late Yvonne Burkart; brother of Elizabeth Ellis (the late Charles) and Harold Burkart (Agnes); uncle of Roger Burkart, Rosalind Smith, Caroline Johnson, Robert Ellis, James Ellis, Brenda Bartelt and Brian Thompson. Dr. Burkart graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology and obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University in Material Sciences. Dr. Burkhart worked his entire career at Bettis Atomic Power, developing nuclear fuel and naval applications. He served as a pharmacist mate on the SS Sea Flier in the South Pacific during WWII. He was active in local politics through the 14th Ward Democratic Club and served as Committee Chair for the 8th Ward. Music was an important part of his life and he appreciated classical as well as folk music. He enjoyed the company of a circle of friends who sang both regional and international folk music. For 20 years, he played in the second violin section of the Edgewood Symphony. Dr. Burkart shared his talent in mathematics as a tutor for elementary and high school children. His lifelong interest in science led him to take all of the undergraduate courses in neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh during his retirement. He also enjoyed folk dancing and downhill and cross-county skiing, which he took up during his retirement. Dr. Burkart enjoyed travel and particularly relished his annual trip to Stone Harbor with close friends. A memorial concert will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the Frick Fine Arts Building on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
