METCALF DONALD JOSEPH Age 87, formerly of New Eagle, PA, recently of Winston-Salem, NC, and York, SC, died on Fri., April 4, 2014, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston- Salem. He was cared for by his daughter, Sharon Roush, throughout his final illness and she was with him as he left this life. Don was born in West Elizabeth, PA, the second son of Gerald Metcalf and Laura (Garvin) Metcalf and moved to Monongahela as an adolescent, where he attended local schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1943, where he served a tour of duty in the Pacific and then enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1944-46. Donald was a proud member of the Steamfitters Union Local 449, for 67 years, worked in various locations throughout Pennsylvania, the Mon Valley, and other nearby states. He was proud of the awards and recognition he earned as a journeyman welder, pipefitter, and steamfitter. He was a born again Christian who tried to lead by example and by active teaching of the faith he professed. Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marjorie Ruth, currently of Winston-Salem, NC; daughters, Nancy Metcalf of Denver, CO, Dawn Metcalf (Joseph) Messina, of Andover, MA, Sharon Roush of Advance, NC, Barbara Sorensen (Steve) of Warren, PA, and Paula Lazar of Brookline, MA; son, Jonathan (Wendy) of Waynesboro, PA. He was predeceased by daughter, Judy in November 2013. He has 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; he has a sister, Margaret Vlanich of New Eagle, PA; and a brother, Clifford of Promise, NC. He was predeceased by brothers, Garvin, Norman Robert Bob, and Richard Dick. He has many nieces and nephews in the Mon Valley area. A Memorial Service in North Carolina is planned for a later date.
