ANNE MARIE (PERSICO) JOYCE Age 84, of Pleasant Hills, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Anthony Mario Persico and Winifred Josephine (Donahoe) Persico and her beloved husband, Richard Gwyer Joyce. She is survived by her four children, Richard T. Joyce of South Park, Eileen (David) Andros of Pleasant Hills, John (Susan) Joyce of Baldwin and Laura (Perry) Beck of Pleasant Hills. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Lauren (Dan) Virgin, Stephen Andros and Jeffrey and Jennifer Joyce; as well as two great-granddaughters, Eva and Emilia Virgin. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Thomas (Mary Louise) Persico of Monessen; her sister, Eileen (the late Reverend Donald) Havrilla of Southampton, NY; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Ruth Joyce of Hilton Head, SC and many loving nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Monessen, she attended St. Leonard's Catholic School where in the first grade she met the love of her life and future husband, Ricky Joyce. A 1953 graduate from Monessen High School, she then worked several years for Bell Telephone and Alcoa before her marriage in 1959. She was a loving, giving and self-sacrificing wife and mother; always putting others before herself. She enjoyed family time, gardening, walking, writing short poems, card games, word puzzles and Scrabble. She found true joy and self-fulfillment as a Jefferson Hospital volunteer where she served for close to 20 years. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Parish since 1959. MARY LOUISE (WHITE) MACZURA Of O'Hara Township passed away on October 13, 2020, at age 89, at the Waters of Wexford Senior Community, Warrendale, PA. Mary was born on June 17, 1931, to Sherrod William and Georgia Elizabeth White. She lived with the family in Sturgeon, MO, until her father died when she was 11 and her mother moved the family to St. Louis, MO. Mary attended Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis. After high school, she worked for a business that sold sprinkler systems. She met her future husband, George through her sister, Jenny. George and Mary started dating in June of 1950 and married two years later on October 18, 1952, at the St. Louis Cathedral. They lived in Illinois until George was transferred for work to Pittsburgh in 1976. They were longtime residents of O'Hara and members of St. Edwards (now St. Pio) Parish in Blawnox. Preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, George MacZura (2015); her parents; her siblings; and her two sons, John Kevin (1985) and William Lawrence "Larry" (2017). She is survived by her children, George, Jr. (Marie), Mary Gail Viadero, James (Vickie), Mary Alice (Larry) Celender (John Kevin's widow), Robert (Patricia), Janet (Peg Zwhalen), Lorene Fetchko (Bill), Richard (Karen), Lynn Asbury (Aaron). She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Jennifer and John (Nickol) MacZura, George, IV (fiancée Christine) and Raymond MacZura, Vanessa and Adriana Viadero, Nisha MacZura; Matthew (Lexie) and Mitchell MacZura, William and Emma Fetchko, Georgia, Eleonore, Josephine, and Katherine MacZura; Benjamin and Christopher Asbury; plus seven great-grandchildren, John Carl, Mark, Emily, Ian, Piper, Grace and Blair. Mary worked as CEO of the MacZura Family Incorporated. She was the cherished mother of ten and an amazing cook who made mouth-watering roast beef. With her husband George, she loved to travel to see family, friends, and the world and to host large family, friends, and neighborhood gatherings. She and George welcomed any and all to their home. She was an avid reader, bridge player, accomplished wordsmith, and scrabble master. She loved to play games with both her children and her grandkids. She was a frequent writer of letters to the editor. She nourished not only our bodies but she fed our hearts, minds, and souls. She was an inspiration to all of us and to all those she met. She loved all and gave all of her love to us. She cherished her kids, her grandkids, her great-grandkids and all of her nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters, and most of all the love of her life, George, with whom she is now reunited with in heaven. Known to family as Bome, Rosemary was the beloved aunt of the late Rosemary (Rosey) Barone, of Whitehall, with whom she lived and was cared for during the past 20+ years, along with Rosey's husband, Stephen Barone, her ever-faithful companion, Rokxi, and children, Daniel of Whitehall, Bryan (Vasthy) of Upper St. Clair, Brad (Natalie) of Peters Township and Laura Barone of Whitehall. Born February 27, 1923 in Pittsburgh and raised on the Southside Slopes, Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose (Knorr) Bittel, and all six of her siblings, George, Marie (Lied), Rita (Larson), John, Robert, and Bernice. She is also the beloved aunt of Dale (Marcia) Larson, Judy (David) Huber, Marilyn Dague, John (Marilyn), David (Rose) Lied, Robert (Debbie) Bittel, Barbara (Louis) Labyoda, Elaine (Paul) Cline, and George (Michele) Bittel, plus 32 great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by nephews, Gary and Mark Bittel. An educator by profession, Thomas worked as a teacher and principal for the Diocese of Greensburg and also as a corporate instructor before retirement. ALBERT A. ASTORINO Age 94, of Avella, died Wednesday, October 14, 2020, in the Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born June 12, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Frank and Mary Russo Astorino. After graduating from Conley Trade Center, he went to work at Universal Cyclops Steel. From 1944 to 1946, Al served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Bremerton, in the South China Sea. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class, on June 10, 1946. For his service, he was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. Following the war, he returned to work at Universal Cyclops, retiring after more than forty years. Mr. Astorino was a member of Upper Buffalo Presbyterian Church, and a lifelong golfer. He was the best dancer in the area. Known affectionately as Poppy Al and Uncle Idy, he was loved by all for 94 years, and will be fondly remembered, and sadly missed. On September 28, 1996, he married the love of his life, Patricia J. Rush Astorino, who survives. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Judith (Mark) Scott, Donald (Mary) Rush, Rebecca (Andrew) McGhee, Barbara Skubovius, and Patrick (Stacy) Rush; ten step-grandchildren, Rev. Andrew Scott, Rev. Benjamin Scott, Hope Scott Paul, Donald A. DR. ALAN HOWARD GRADMAN Beloved husband of Temima Gradman for 50 years; father of Arielle (Jack) Berlin, Gideon (Juliette) Gradman and Jonathan (Alexandra) Gradman; grandfather of Benji and Sammy Berlin, Yuval, Eli and Lev Gradman; and brother of Lisa Lipton and the late Marc Gradman, passed away at his home in Pittsburgh on October 1 from pancreatic cancer. He was 74. Dr. Gradman was born September 26, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to David and Gertrude Gradman and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Duke University as an Angier B. Duke Scholar and received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in cardiology at Stanford University in California. Dr. Gradman spent 13 years on the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital. He and his family came to Pittsburgh in 1990 when he became Chief of Cardiology at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, where he engaged in research, teaching, and caring for patients for the next 19 years. He also served on the faculty of Temple University Medical School as Professor of Medicine. Dr. Gradman's research in cardiovascular diseases specialized in Hypertensionand Heart Failure, and he authored over 130 articles, reviews, and book chapters. He lectured all over the world, combining his love of teaching with his love of travel and adventure. This passion for teaching extended into his volunteer work, including hisdecades-long volunteering in India teaching doctors at the Satya Sai Superspecialty Hospital in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, India. Outside of medicine, Alan had a broad range of interests, from ancient history to current events. He was a voracious readerand a perpetual student, who took the time to understand topics deeply, often seeking out primary sources and first-hand accounts of historical events to gain insight into the events and issues of today. His family and friends enjoyed his conversations and looked forward to his insights, which will surely be missed. He also loved hiking, especially in the West, which he enjoyed with his sons, Gideon and Jonathan, and his brother, Marc. He had a special fondness for Yosemite National Park, where he went on an annual family hiking trip for over 20 years. Loving father of Michell (Brian) Miller, Ashley (Raymond IV) Winter and Nicole (Ryan) Levinger. Dear "Pappy" of Benjamin, Jack, Lillian and Raymond V. Son of the late Thomas and Ella Marie Weible. STEPHEN K. MIMM On October 11, 2020, Stephen K. Mimm of Crawford County passed away peacefully after a short illness at UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA. Stephen was born on July 1, 1949, in Pittsburgh, PA. He lived in the Hampton, West Deer townships until he moved to Pymatuning Lake over 25 years ago. He loved to hunt and fish and spend time with his many family and friends when they would come to visit him. He had a heart of gold to those that he loved. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie (Trent) Demek and grandson Austin Demek of Gibsonia, his two sisters Pam Mimm of Allison Park and Marylee (Wayne) Swick of Fombell and granddaughter Adalyn Mimm of Valencia. He is predeceased by his parents Joe and Irene Mimm and his son Shawn Mimm. As per his request no viewing was held and there will be a celebration of his life next summer.
