NANCY GROSS BERKOWITZ BORN ON ...

NANCY GROSS BERKOWITZ Born on October 24, 1933, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and fighter, died on Saturday, October 17, 2020, just a week before her 87th birthday. She was the younger daughter of Edward Benjamin Gross zl and Elizabeth Minnette Levey, zl, sister of Lee Gross Anthone, zl (Sidney), and the beloved niece of Augusta Levey (z). She grew up in Buffalo, where she attended the Buffalo Seminary. After graduating from Smith College, where she majored in American Studies, she worked for Doubleday and other publishers, eventually working on Alfred A. Knopf's personal papers. In 1958, she met her husband, Lester Berkowitz, on a blind date in Manhattan that was so successful that two separate people claimed credit for it. After telling Les off for innocently offering the name of an opera they were discussing - we now call this mansplaining - she decided that she was going to marry him, which she did in February 1959, but only after he agreed to read Moby Dick. He was the love of her life, but she would not want us to write that because it is a cliché and she would have cut it out, even though it was true. Nancy and Les spent seven months living in Italy shortly after they married. In 1966, they moved from New York to Pittsburgh, with a two-year stint in London, and traveled all over the world. She made friends everywhere she went and kept them her entire life. When she took her children to Italy, she took them to galleries and cathedrals, but more importantly to the green grocer, the butcher, their favorite neighborhood haunts and restaurants, and to meet her dear friends. Nancy had two children, Ellen and David, a granddaughter, Abby, and multiple nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews, who she adored. She loved her own family, and often said how lucky she was to have such wonderful in-laws. She also loved her friends' children and had an affinity for kids who weren't naturally compliant, which was a good thing for her daughter and granddaughter. She worked as an editor her entire life and would have taken a green pen to this obituary. After moving to Pittsburgh, she edited for the Western Psychiatric Institute, the University of Pittsburgh, Westinghouse Research and Development, Rodef Shalom Congregation, and Rabbi Walter Jacob. She loved words and read incessantly and widely -- Melville, Dickens, Shakespeare, Thomas Mann, Thomas Hardy, and various writers in French. Although she made friends and connections everywhere she went, she refused to even try Facebook, insisting there were too many books to read. Like her mother, her sister and her aunt, she was an accomplished cook and baker. She loved feeding people and making them feel welcome. For thirty years she assembled and froze apple crisps and apple pies with her dear friend Audrey Schoenwald. She held a wedding dinner for a friend who remarried at age 70, and made 30 individual lemon mousses, after making her children scoop out the insides of 30 lemons to use as containers. We never had a store-bought cake. She made her own gefilte fish, which appeared at over thirty years of seders with the Tregers. She gardened and made flower arrangements, and was a docent at the Biblical Garden at Rodef Shalom. Around 1990, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She immediately began taking exercise classes, making her body as strong as possible and learning everything she could about the disease. When she had a short hospitalization a short while later, she realized the importance of people having advocates with them, and after she retired from her job as a writer and editor, became a volunteer ombudsman for patients through the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging. She also read to twin girls through Beginning with Books, a program established by friends, from the time they were little until well past when the program usually ended, and remained in touch with them and their grandmother until her death. She had an innate sense of justice. She stuck up for kids who were mistreated, storming into the principal's office with a handful of change when a teacher refused to provide a Weekly Reader to a child who hadn't paid the 35 cents. She welcomed our friends, especially quirky ones who didn't quite fit in their own families. Although she was critical about hair and clothing, she was never critical about us, who we were as people. She was a devoted and loving grandmother and such a good friend. She could hold a grudge. She would not forgive anyone who hurt anyone she loved. That feeling of justice was political, too. She was on the board of the United Nations Association of Pittsburgh and was active in the ACLU. She boycotted grapes, lettuce, and Nestle. She was overjoyed and amazed and full of hope at the election of Barack Obama. She mourned John Lewis. She believed passionately in our democracy. She made us read Civil Disobedience in middle school. She told us Lincoln was complicated in his views of slavery. She made us watch the Watergate hearings and told us the Constitution was magnificent and that the system worked. She was compassionate and kind, and the meanness and hatred of the past four years wore on her. She believed we were better than this. But she didn't demonize people she loved who felt differently and asked us not to. She did not get to vote. In her memory, please appreciate the gift of democracy. In the last years of her life, she struggled with her illness. She never complained. She persisted. She continued to be the same loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend she had always been. Donations may be made to National MS Society, Temple Rodef Shalom, or the American Civil Liberties Union, Pittsburgh Chapter. Graveside Services snd Interment Private. MARY CHAKOS MARY CHAKOS, OF SC...
MARY CHAKOS Mary Chakos, of Scott Township, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, October 16, at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter. She was the cherished mother of Rev. John Chakos (Alexandra), George (Kit), and Athena McMonagle (Richard); and beloved grandmother of Peter Chakos, Nicholas (Heidi), Maria Manning (Christopher), Merissa Hayden (Ricardo), Brendan McMonagle (Kristen) and Jennifer Kontul (Christian). She was loved, admired and adored by her 19 great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her Super Yiayia. She was known for her joyous demeanor and broad smile, her irrepressible personality, her keen interest in people and her remarkable memory, which she drew upon frequently to regale her listeners. For many years, she was a fixture at Primanti's, selling her palate-pleasing Greek pastries to customers. Family and church formed the center of her life. As a woman of profound faith and founding member of Holy Cross Church, she devoted herself to its mission in so many tangible ways. As a stalwart Philoptochos member, she shopped for, cooked and served the mercy meals (makarias) for hundreds of grieving families. Until recently, she prepared the boiled wheat (koliva) for the Sunday memorial services. The annual food fair, all Philoptochos fundraisers, hospitality for parish sponsored meetings and meals, and feeding the homeless found her in the kitchen cooking and serving the food. Her regular visits to and prayers for the homebound or hospitalized over many years touched the lives of those in need of healing and comfort in their affliction. Her home always welcomed converts, visiting missionaries and monastics, bishops, priests, and many gatherings for prayer and fellowship. She derived some of the greatest joys of her church life from her active participation in the liturgical services, weekly Bible Studies, parish and diocesan retreats, Holy Land pilgrimages, visits to monasteries and mission trips to the orphanage in Guatemala. Visitation will be Monday, October 19, from 2 - 8 p.m. at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Mt. Lebanon at 123 Gilkeson Road, Pgh., PA 15228. Trisagion service 7:00 p.m. Additional visitation will take place Tuesday, 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will be at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. HELEN REESE BUTLER PRINE AGE ...
HELEN REESE BUTLER PRINE Age 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her daughters, on Friday, October 16, 2020. Helen was born in Elyria, Ohio on April 16, 1928, the beloved only child of her parents, Howard and Florence Reese Butler. Helen's father passed away in 1940. She and her mother moved to Columbus, Ohio after she completed high school and she graduated from The Ohio State University in 1950. She met her future husband, Malcolm (Mac) Prine at OSU and they were married on September 7, 1951. They raised their three daughters in Columbus, Hudson, Ohio and Pittsburgh. Never a natural athlete, Helen participated enthusiastically in all family sporting events, including tennis, paddle tennis, golf and skiing. She was the 1971 Champion of the Sewickley Invitational Paddle Tennis Tournament. Helen and Mac's backyard paddle tennis court became a social centerpiece in Sewickley and they enjoyed the company of so many friends in the dining room viewing window during tournaments, especially a day-long extravaganza every New Year's Day. Helen was a longtime volunteer for the Child Health Association, The Presbyterian Church of Sewickley, Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. She was also a former owner of The Gift Corner in Sewickley. Helen excelled at needlepoint and her creations will be enjoyed by her family for generations. Her home was filled with beautiful needlepoint pillows, pictures, chairs, and even a nativity scene, and she created beautiful needlepoint keepsakes for each of her grandchildren as they were born. Helen was the consummate mother and was there for her girls throughout her entire life. She had lunch ready for them when they walked home from elementary school (yes, children really did that in the 60's). She spent long and happy hours at swim meets, horse shows, tennis matches, concerts, hockey games, basketball games, paddle tennis matches, college visits, plays and dance recitals, and she was always available to babysit her beloved grandchildren and later her sweet great-grandchildren (and everyone's dogs!), go shopping for clothes, take trips, provide company, pick up and drop off, listen, and solve problems, big and small. She was there when they needed her and her home was always the softest place to land. We pay special tribute to Helen's lifelong friends, some for over 70 wonderful years: Shirley, DA, Peggy S. Betty, Mary Lou, Janet and Peggy H. Their picnics, golf outings, baseball tournaments, family ski vacations, shopping trips, children's moves, travels abroad - and one very memorable Simon & Garfunkel concert in Akron, Ohio - were legendary for their love and laughter, and for the memories that will never be extinguished. Helen is survived by her three daughters, Margaret (Peggy) Joy, Diane Stewart and Martha Prine; her granddaughter and husband, Katie and Brian Rosinski; grandsons, Mike and Timmy Stewart; and great-grandchildren, Cole, Reese and Erin Rosinski. She is also survived by her nephew and niece, Christopher Bussert and Victoria Bussert. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Helen's memory to: Magee Women's Hospital, 300 Halket Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, 4850 West Powell Road, Powell, Ohio 43065. Graveside services will be private. There will be a memorial for Helen on October 16, 2021, when we can be together and celebrate her life and legacy in safety and with joy and appreciation for her steadfast and gentle love.
