WEDNER MARC R. Age 76, of Valley Village, California, died on June 19, 2014, following a lengthy illness. He was the only son of Sylvia and Marcus Wedner. Funeral Services were held June 22, 2014, in Mount Sinai Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills. Marc was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Shady Side Academy and Haverford College. He married Pamela Gordon and moved to California in 1961 after the birth of their daughter. He lived in the San Fernando Valley for 53 years and worked at several aerospace, technology, and telecommunications firms around Southern California. A proud workaholic, he also avidly pursued his passions for equity waiver theater, Bebop jazz, WWII history, and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Wedner Roeder; and son-in-law, Gil Roeder and his son, Marcus Wedner; and daughter-in-law, Anne Wedner. He is survived by four grandchildren, Adam Roeder, Eleanor Roeder, Dorothy Wedner, and Sylvia Martha Wedner. He was uncle to Alex Segal, Justin Segal, Joshua Segal, and Erica Bootchk; brother-in-law to Valerie Gordon Lee; and great-uncle to eight nieces and nephews. STANKO JOHN J. John "Jay" Stanko, 89, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2014, Robinson Township. He was born January 16, 1925, to Peter and Barbara (Slota) Stanko in Preston. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Dolores "Doll" (White) Stanko; his six children, Sharon L. Martin (Max Gilbert) of Little Rock, Arkansas, John M. (Brenda) of Lexington, Kentucky, Debra A. Meyer (Raymond) of Pittsburgh, Gregory P. (Maryellen) of Carnegie, Keith C. (Tina) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Lauren M. Stanko of Ross Township; 16 grandchildren, Brett, Jonathan, Shelley, John W., Justin, Adam, Virginia, Tonya, Ashley, Peter, Kathryn, Evan, Heather, Braden, Ryan and Rachel; and nine great- grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. A World War II veteran, John served our country as a Sergeant in the 405th Signal Company, 5th U.S. Army-Air Force, stationed in the South Pacific. His tour of duty included setting up communication lines preceding the troops' arrival, operating as a radio technician throughout the Philippine Islands and Japan. He was a long-time member of the V.F.W. Post 402. in 1952, John designed and built the family home in Robinson Township where he and Dolores raised their six children. John worked at Shenago Inc., Neville Island for 42 years and served as the President of the United Steelworkers Union for 16 years. During the 1970s, John, an avid inventor, acquired five U.S. patents. After his retirement, he pursued a new hobby, woodworking, where he won many awards and was quite prolific. Throughout his life, John fascinated many with his mechanical skills, building campers, trailers, and hydraulic log splitters, to name a few. He had a love of learning, creating, collecting, and building that few could rival, and instilled those qualities in his children. He also enjoyed fishing and travel. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter "Ludge" Stanko; four sisters, Mary Makar, Ann Blumling, Pauline Baron, and Elizabeth Zirkel. SMIY PAUL R. Age 90, of Irwin, went to the Lord Mon., June 23, 2014. He was born Sept. 5, 1923, in West Jeannette to the late Constantine Smiy and Mary Smiy Capar. He graduated from Jeannette High School in 1941. Upon graduating, he began his employment in the mailroom of the Elliott Company, a turbo machinery manufacturer. His employment was interrupted in 1943 when he left to serve in the Pacific Theater during WWII as a member of the 502nd anti-aircraft battalion in Leyte, and during the invasion of Okinawa. After the war, Paul returned to Elliott, took night courses at the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State Extension and Carnegie-Mellon University, and rose through its manufacturing ranks. He retired from Elliott in 1998, as its chairman and CEO. Throughout his life, Paul was active supporting his community having served on the boards of Jeannette Hospital, Jeannette Health Place, Jeannette Hospital Foundation, Norwin YMCA, Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Catholic Charities, Japan-American Society, Boy Scouts of America-Westmoreland Fayette Council and ARC Westmoreland. He was past co-chairman of the Westmoreland County Area Labor Management Committee, past president of the Irwin Lions and a member of numerous community committees. As a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin, Paul served on several past church committees as well. He was a trustee of the Paul and Anne Smiy Family Foundation supporting a wide range of charitable organizations in the community. He was the Jeannette High School Distinguished Alumni recipient in 1990, the Jeannette Jaycees Man of the Year in 1991, received the William H. Spurgeon Award for his contributions to the Boy Scouts Explorer Program in 1996, received the Westmoreland Community College Humanitarian Award in 1997, the Catholic Charities Salt and Light Philanthropic Award in 2001, the Three Rivers Award from the Japan-American Society in 2006, and named a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2011. In addition to service to his community, Paul enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, following the Steelers, Pirates and Pens, and playing golf. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Anne Malazik Smiy; his son, David Smiy and wife, Brenda, of Chesterfield, VA; daughter, Patricia Smiy, of Irwin; and daughter, Linda Turner and husband, Joseph, of Sewickley; four grandchildren, Allison Williams and husband, Aaron, David Smiy, Jr. and wife, Katie, John Smiy, Jeffrey Turner; brother, Nicholas Smiy and wife, Betty, of Greensburg; sister, Helen Neel and husband, Ed, of Gaithersburg, MD; sister-in-law, Cathy Smiy, of Fort Mill, SC; stepsister, Bernice Krivoruchka and husband, Ted, of Springfield, VA; stepsister-in-law, Helen Capar, of Fredericksburg, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
