WOODWELL JOHN K. III Age 59, of Spokane, Washington, died August 28, 2014, at his home. He was born November 8, 1954, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late John Knowles, Jr., and Martha Reed Woodwell. In addition to his parents, Mr. Woodwell was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Herron Woodwell. Mr. Woodwell grew up on Reynolds Street in the Point Breeze area of Pittsburgh. He attended Shadyside Academy in Pittsburgh, Valley School in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, and the Orme School near Mayer, Arizona. After graduating from the University of Wyoming, Mr. Woodwell worked as a land man in Wyoming, negotiating oil and gas leases for Victory Land and Exploration of Denver, Colorado. Recovering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, he began a new career as a stock broker, first with Parker Hunter in Pittsburgh, and then with Fidelity Investments in Denver, Colorado. In 1990, Mr. Woodwell moved to the Pacific Northwest, working as Lands Database Manager for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation near Pendleton, Oregon. In that position, he designed, implemented and maintained an agriculture and lands database used for leasing and land management by the tribes. As an independent venture, he raised registered Angus cattle. In 2000, Mr. Woodwell moved to Spokane, Washington, continuing his work in data management with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Subsequently, he returned to college, earning a degree in geography with an emphasis in geographic information systems from Eastern Washington University. In 1994, Mr. Woodwell married Joni Gibbens, originally of North Dakota. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Pamela Woodwell Geerdes (married to Gregg Geerdes), of Rochester, Minnesota; and his faithful dog, Curran. Mr. Woodwell was a member of the Rolling Rock Club, Ligonier, Pennsylvania and the Wianno Club, Osterville, Mass. Private interment will take place in St. Michael's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Rector, Pennsylvania on September 27, 2014. RHEINLANDER ROBERT BOB H. Of Clinton, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Bob was born in Maspeth, New York on January 17, 1934, a son of Charles A. and Barbara Niesz Rheinlander. He was a graduate of Spring Valley High School in New York, and obtained an engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was the Safety Manager for Merck at the Calgon location, retiring in 1993. Bob enjoyed spending time at his lakeside cottage, sailing, and researching family genealogy. He was very interested in home computers from the early days, and was an administrator of several websites during his retirement. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Claire Baker Rheinlander; and four children, Nancy Mumaw (husband, Dan) of Youngstown, Ohio, Carol Fahmy of Moon Township, David Rheinlander (wife, Gretchen) of Burgettstown, and Joanne Rheinlander of Perry County; six grandchildren, Becky Mumaw, Jamie Young, Jessie Young Boyce, Danielle Rheinlander Meneely, Kristen Mumaw, and Tamer Fahmy; and three great-grandchildren. RALSTON ROBERT E. Bob Ralston passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 11, 2014, at the age of 86. He was a three year resident of Four Seasons Beaumont, born in Tulsa, OK, in 1928. His parents were John and Estelle Ralston of Tulsa. Bob received his master's degree from the University of Tulsa and was the director of human resources for Gulf Oil in Pittsburgh, PA, before retiring to San Diego. Survivors include his beloved wife of 41 years, Shirley (Gerri) Ralston; his children, Cheryl Ralston Staples and Stephen Ralston of Beaumont, CA, James Ralston of Pittsburgh, PA, and Jan Ralston of Morgan Hill, CA; his stepchildren include Jill Elhard of San Diego, CA, Pokie Griffiths of Hamilton, OH, and Doug and David Busch of Pittsburgh, PA; and ten grandchildren. Bob was the valued patriarch of a large blended family whose counsel and love will be greatly missed. HOGAN WILLIAM A. BILL Of Forest Hills, passed away after a long illness on Sunday, September 21, 2014, at Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont. He married Lorraine Haley on May 3, 1953, and had five children, Mark (Susie) of Youngstown, OH, William (Sue) of Level Green, Betsy (Bob) Huber of Latrobe, Frank (Dawn) of Apollo and Ed (Barb) of Cranberry; he enjoyed his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson; brother of Mary Ann Staub and Cathleen Hogan. Bill was born on January 27, 1929, to Mary (Rochez) and Hugh Hogan. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Thomas High School in Braddock. While raising his family and working full time he attended the University of Pittsburgh and received his Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy in 1962. Bill worked for many years serving the steel industry in the Pittsburgh area for Specialty Steel Products in Braddock, PA, a division of Rochez Brothers. He retired as general manager in 1992. In addition to his work, family and friends, Bill enjoyed living for over 55 years in Forest Hills. He was an active member in the volunteer fire department, Auxiliary Police and Lions Club. He also was active in local government. He was the first Democrat elected to Forest Hills Council in 1972. He continued to serve in Council late into his life and was voted President of Council during that time. He truly loved Forest Hills and its residents. Friends received WOLFE MEMORIAL INC. PHIPPS JAMES ROBERT Age 89, was born in Gary, WV on April 3, 1925, and died peacefully on September 21, 2014. He grew up in Hopewell, VA, and enjoyed spending time at the Farrier family farm in Newport, VA. After serving his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to Virginia to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, and soon after met his future wife, Anne Gills. They have been happily married for over 60 years. They moved to Sewickley, PA, where he continued his work as an executive with Chubb & Son Insurance in Pittsburgh. While in Sewickley, Jim was an active member of the Sewickley United Methodist Church, singing in the adult choir, teaching Sunday school, and serving in many leadership roles. His extensive community involvement included volunteering at the Sewickley YMCA, public library, and Edgeworth Elementary School. Jim will be lovingly remembered for his dedication to his family, faith in his Lord, passion for music and sports, and his genuine delight in animals. In addition to his wife, Anne, Jim is survived by his four children, R. Stephen Phipps and his wife, Trish, of Charlottesville, VA, Mary Stewart (Bunny) Huller and her husband, David, of Rocky River, OH, Nancy Phipps Lewis and her husband, Walter, of Mount Vernon, OH, and Anne Phipps Mau, of Hudson, OH; and five grandchildren, Stuart and Elizabeth Huller, Emily Lewis, and Kyle and James Mau.
