KELLY ROSEMARY AGE 90, SPUNKY ...

KELLY ROSEMARY Age 90, spunky Rosie Kelly's heart gave out at the Treasure Coast Hospice in Fort Pierce, Florida, on October 10, 2014. It had been used well throughout her life. She and her beloved husband, Bobby, reached out to the vulnerable, opening their door to those in crisis and those without friends. During her midlife career as a public health nurse to mothers and children, she did far more than provide medical advice and immunizations. She tirelessly searched out opportunities for her patients to re-enter school and the workforce and for their children to receive all the available resources they needed to succeed. After her retirement, she tutored adults to prepare them for their GED test and later in life delivered library books to shut-ins. Spunk, however, was made of stronger stuff than a big heart. Rosie was always willing to go to battle, whether against the ragweed in the field behind her house, which she attempted to burn down to protect her daughter, Mary, and son, Pat, from hay fever (a special thanks to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department for snuffing that out) or against the tendencies of schools of the '50s and '60s to label children and restrict their opportunities based on their IQs (this may be a disclosure that some us were not as brilliant as we or she thought). Well into her 80s, she spoke up against war, environmental hazards, intolerance, and injustice. Her dining room table was more often used as a research center for whatever cause she was undertaking than Sunday dinner. The envelopes enclosing junk mail were covered with notes that only she could read. Rosie's spunk was most apparent, though, as she faced a diminishing memory. Early on in her disease, she reassured her children that Alzheimer's was nothing to fear. In fact, it compelled her to live in the moment while it erased any anger or resentment she had once harbored. Although she forgot names, she continued to reach out to people, to express her affection and gratitude. She entertained herself with books that she restarted every day and even wrote a few letters to the editor. When memory failed, Rosie looked at the ever-changing sky, and when her vision failed, she scrutinized a hibiscus held within her hand. To the very end of her days, she continued with her big ideas—bringing forest rangers into the area to clean up the brush and marry the area's spinsters, finding a place where all could be happy. Those of you who wish to celebrate Rosie's life may join the 49 and a half members of her family for an 11:30 Funeral Mass at St. Bernard's Church in Mt. Lebanon on November 15, 2014. Please share some of your own memories with the family at a luncheon at Buon Giorno Café at 6 Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh, following the Graveside Service in the Allegheny Cemetery on Butler Street in Bloomfield. Rosie wanted to make a difference even after her death. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to Dauphin County Library System, 101 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101 (for online donations: http://dcls.org/Honor_Someone_Special) or Treasure Coast Hospice, 5090 NW Dunn Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981 (for online donations: https://secure2.convio.net/tch/site/SPageNavigator/donate .html).
