PLEASANTS WARREN OF PENN HILLS...

PLEASANTS WARREN Of Penn Hills, age 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 1, 2014. Preceded in death by his parents, Jan and Sue Pleasants. Survived by his sister, Louise Leor Mann; and nephews, Dave (Rose), Don (Liz) and Rick (Barb) Mann; and niece, Sue (Mark) Breedlove; and numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Warren moved to Penn Hills as a young boy when his parents built a log house on Jefferson Road in Rodi. This home served the family well throughout the Great Depression years when the family took in boarders to help make ends meet. Active in scouting as a boy, and a member of an active scouting family, it was scouting that won the family a trip to the 1940 World's Fair in New York City. His mother always claimed, however, that it was Warren who charmed the judges into awarding the trip to the Pleasants. The family located to Ligonier, PA for several years when Warren's father took on the responsibilities as Camp Ranger at the Boy Scout Camp Twin Echo. He and his parents also lived on Frankstown Avenue in the East Hills area, and then in Wilkinsburg. Upon the death of his parents, he moved back to Penn Hills around the corner from the log home he grew up in. Warren made his living for 40 years as a cab driver, and no doubt his enduring ability to charm anyone he chose served him well as he delivered fares to their destinations in the region. His true love and talent were directed to his art work, which was exhibited at both the Pittsburgh Playhouse and numerous art shows over the years. He loved opera and classical music and maintained an extensive collection of both. Always handy with tools and self-reliant, Warren remodeled and maintained both the big house on Hill Avenue in Wilkinsburg and his Penn Hills home and tended to their gardens, keeping it as a showcase for all to see. Warren enjoyed the company of his family and neighbors and was always ready to share his love of art, literature, classical music, and gardening with anyone who visited, particularly the neighbor kids Anthony, Frank, and C. J., and their friends. Warren, or Unk as his nieces and nephews knew him, lived the life of a renaissance man to the fullest. Funeral arrangements private. Memorial contributions may be made in the name of Warren Pleasants to Forbes Hospice, c/o Forbes Health Foundation, 2570 Haymaker Road, Monroeville, PA 15146. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

EVANS BEN E. OF NORTH CANTON, ...

EVANS BEN E. Of North Canton, Ohio, formerly of Mt. Lebanon (Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, a Christian gentleman and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2014. He was born in Carbon Hill, Ohio on May 14, 1922, to the late Henry Eugene and Mary Agusta (Winigman) Evans. He graduated from Plains High School in Ohio in 1940 and entered into the engineering program at Ohio University in the fall of 1940. In November 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served with the Hqs. Btry., 967th AAA Gun BN in the Pacific Theater of Operations earning four campaign stars and a bronze arrowhead as part of the assault force landing on Green Island. A true civilian-soldier of the Greatest Generation, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, the top NCO rank in the Battalion. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Ohio University and finished his studies earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1948. Ben joined PPG in 1948, working for 38 years at the company. During his tenure with PPG, he was responsible for overseeing the building of new chemical processing facilities and the expansion of existing facilities. He gained a reputation for handling the tougher assignments due to his organizational, technical, and managerial expertise. He retired from PPG in 1986. In his retirement, he became a master in the art of stained glass. He built many beautiful stain glass objects, including lamps, windows and other works. He donated much of his work to the church to raise money. While at PPG's Natrium, WV chemical plant, he met Nancy Jane Loy and in late 1949, they were married and united for over 64 years. Ben was devoted to his family, raising three sons who reflected his fundamental values of respect for all, a disciplined work ethic, self-reliance, faith in God, and devotion to country. Words like duty, honor, country, God, and family were not just words but values to be reflected in your everyday life. In addition to his focus on his career with PPG and providing for his family, Ben had another passion. Ben's father, Henry was the Plains, Ohio station master for the C&O railroad, and he grew up around trains igniting a lifelong passion for all aspects of railroading including model railroading. Many a family vacation included a side trip to a railroad yard or museum. Growing up in the age of steam locomotion, he was an aficionado of steam engines and we have fond memories of being drilled in identifying various classes of steam engines based on their wheel configuration. Ben was also involved with Boy Scouts of America. While Nancy may have been the ultimate den mother, Ben was the driver when it came to the Boy Scouts. He believed that scouting ideals were the foundational character attributes that make young men successful in life. All three of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. However, he was most proud that each of sons were also award God and Country award. To him this represented the highest form of character development. Although his interests were not outdoors orientated after 28 months in the Pacific, in 1966, he shepherded 22 scouts over 72 miles of the New Mexico wilderness at the Philmont Scout Ranch. The Philmont Grace is still the standard for all family meals. He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, serving on the Church Vestry and as an usher. He also supported Nancy in her many church and charitable activities. Later in his life he became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible study activities, including debating on many Biblical interpretations. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy; his brothers, Bill Eldon Evans and Bob Rex Evans; and beloved granddaughter, Kathleen Marie-Soo Evans. He is survived by his sons, Mark (Patti) Evans of San Antonio, Texas, Stephen (Susan) Evans of Hartville, Ohio, and Eric (Doris) Evans of Atlanta, Georgia; and grandchildren, Daniel Evans, Theresa (Allen) Cruz, Emily Evans, and William Evans. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, December 11, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7707 Market Ave. N., Canton, OH 44721, and Saturday, December 13, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1066 Washington Rd., Mt. Lebanon, PA 15228. Interment will take place in St. Paul's Columbarium. The family requests memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Old St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Carnegie, PA.
