Preceded in death by dear friend and loving companion, Anthony J. Chaido. Nevann spent her early life and retirement on Polish Hill and raised her family in Shaler and at the Country House in Millers Eddy, PA. As a R.N. she worked Labor and Delivery at AGH and retired from Western PA School for Blind Children. She was a lover of animals, especially cats, music, poetry, books, old movies, gardening and history of religions. She will be remembered by special friends, Debbie Huebner and Kristy Swencki and Gene and Rosemary Smith. GREULICH THOMAS A. Age 90, of Harmar Twp., formerly of Fox Chapel, died suddenly on Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Beloved husband of Sally (Bollinger) Greulich; loving father of Thomas A. (Susan) Greulich, Jr. of Baltimore, MD, Elizabeth G. (Kevin) Gilleland of Raleigh, NC and Margaret G. Garland of Ligonier, PA; loving stepfather of Anne (Richard) Vareha of Mars, PA and Edward K. (Deb) Davison of Akron, OH; cherished grandfather of Sarah Ruberto, Mary "Meg" Greulich, Sarah and Olivia Gilleland, Robbie and Tommy Garland; step- grandfather of Olivia Vareha, Kaitlyn Vareha and Kyle Vareha; brother of the late Louis P. Greulich and Margaret G. Hinckley. Tom was a graduate of Shady Side Academy ('43) and Yale University ('49). Between high school and college, he served in World War II as a pilot in the US Army Air Corps (2nd Lt.). He later served as a fighter pilot in the NY Air National Guard (1st Lt.), and was a transatlantic pilot for Pan American Airways. He continued his love of flying as a private pilot throughout his life. Tom founded Greulich, Inc. in 1954. The company had its beginning in the erection of structural steel and soon expanded into heavy machinery installation, pile driving, concrete work and marine work. The company enjoyed its greatest success in the manufacturing and installation of steel grid bridge flooring systems for new and existing bridges. After selling his company, Tom became an Owner/Manger of the Fox Chapel Office Center, and Manager of the Mews II condominium. When he finally retired at 75, Tom continued his regimen of daily exercise and pursued his interests in history, astronomy and current events. He was a voracious reader, and also enjoyed watching the college lecture series, The Great Courses. Tom was an intelligent, humble, loving man of America's Greatest Generation. Ledgerwood; loving children, Tom (Joyce) Ledgerwood of Aliquippa, PA, Jan (Pete) Beccari of Oakdale, PA and Jack (Susy) Ledgerwood of Herndon, VA; four grandchildren, Julie (Jonathan) Cook of Rock Hill, SC, Laura (Mike) Seibert of Bel Air, MD, Aaron Ledgerwood of Pittsburgh, PA and Megan Ledgerwood of Aliquippa, PA; eight great-grandchildren, Caleb, Ethan and Gabriel Cook, Mary Grace, Lucia, Joseph, Gianna and Baby Seibert; and one brother, Jerry (Dolby) LeGrand. Madeline was preceded in death by infant grandsons, John Blaise, Alexander and Kolbe Cook. She was aunt to many nieces and nephews; and friend to many whom she loved dearly. Madeline loved her family tremendously and was there for every milestone and event in their lives. She was a giving and loving person who made friends quickly due to her ability to make everyone feel comfortable in her presence. Madeline adored the seashore, but her favorite beach stateside was Myrtle Beach, SC. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. SACHNOFF MERLE 6/1/1925 6/17/2015. Merle Sachnoff died peacefully June 17, 2015, in Boulder, Colorado at the age of 90. Merle is survived by his wife, Ruth Sachnoff in Boulder, Colorado; and son, Lee F. Sachnoff from Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his son, Matt Sachnoff from Boulder, Colorado. Merle was born on June 1, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Meyer and Lucy Sachnoff. After serving in the Army Air Force in WWII, he graduated from Pennsylvania State College in 1949 with a degree in Bachelor of Liberal Arts. He married Ruth Rosenberg in 1955. After first skiing in Colorado in 1960, Merle and Ruth began looking for opportunities to move to the state. In 1973, they realized their dream and relocated to Boulder. Merle continued his real estate business, developing the Sheraton Boulder Inn, and pursued his deep passion for skiing and the outdoors. Merle traveled back to Pittsburgh frequently until 2011. OPPERMAN DOUGLAS A. DOUG Age 90, of Pittsburgh's Northside, died peacefully surrounded by his family on June 30, 2015. Born May 16, 1925, he was married 54 years to his beloved wife, Margaret "Peggy" Toner, who preceded him in death. Doug was the devoted father of Donna Hinkle (Carl), Douglas Opperman, Jr. (Sharon), Lorraine Opperman- Dermond (Dale), Christine Charnesky (Robert), Kenneth Opperman, and Julia Edwards. He was a loving grandfather to Clint, Justin, Cliff, Shea, Leanne, Rachel, Ian, Chad, Emily, Wes, Christian, Leif, Chase and the late Mary; great-grandfather to Kennedi, Samuel, Isaac, Chase, Abigail, Nathan, Levi, and Ryan; brother of Thomas, James, Patricia, Evelyn, Richard, Barbara, and Hilary; and uncle to numerous nephews and nieces. As a teenager, Doug was the City of Pittsburgh Marbles Tournament Champion from 1937-1940, and represented Pittsburgh at the national competition held in Wildwood, NJ. In 1940, he won the U.S. National Marbles Tournament Championship and appeared at the World's Fair held in New York City, where he demonstrated his famous backspin marble shooting technique. In 2004, Doug donated his memorabilia from this era to the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and it is displayed in the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum at the Heinz History Center. He was a minor league baseball shortstop who played for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees farm leagues. He worked as a pile driver, an ironworker, an airlines transportation driver, and later as business owner of Bellevue Carpet. An avid golfer and a loyal sports fan, he also was a respected baseball coach for North Pittsburgh Pony League and Bellevue- Avalon Little League teams. Doug was very generous, gracious, and fun, enjoyed his family, and was a dear friend to many. Friends and family will be received Sunday, July 5, 2015, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at LAWRENCE T. BECK VIRGINIA A. (MAHONEY) Age 89, of Mt. Washington, died of a short illness on Friday, June 26, 2015. Virginia was a loving mother of four children; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; with twins on the way; and one great-great-grandchild. She married Robert J. Beck, Sr. in 1946 and they spent the next 58 years raising and enjoying their family. She is survived by her three children, Judith Beck Kline (David) of Redondo Beach, CA, Robert Beck (Rita) of Beavercreek, OH and Michael Beck (Carol) of East Liverpool, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her son, Dennis (Elaine) of Pittsburgh; and brother, Charles Mahoney. Virginia was born on September 11, 1925, and was a lifetime Pittsburgh resident. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and dear friend, she worked at Carnegie Mellon University Library for a number of years. She led her life as a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Philips, while raising her family in Crafton, and later joined St. Mary of the Mount when she moved to Mt. Washington. She is admired by those who knew her for her strength - and the ability to overcome the obstacles presented to her in life, her gratitude - being eternally grateful for the love of those around her and all that life had to offer, and her humor - always finding a way to laugh her way through every situation to the very end.
