MUKO DANIEL (DAN) BRUCE Of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Sewickely, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 18, 2013 while in the company of his loving family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary "Babe" (Kachurik) Muko and a brother, Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Diana (White) Muko; father, Herman and wife, Josephine (Marlinga) Muko; sister-in-law, Sharon Jamison; sister, Cindy (Frank) Bailey; brother, Ron (Sharon) Muko; sister, Amy (Michael) Minnock; stepchildren; step-grandchild, Sophia; uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends that loved him dearly. Born in New Kensington, PA on August 1, 1958, he was proud to be the grandson of coal miners. Dan's family moved to Sewickley, and at a young age developed his natural inclination for art. He was a graduate of Quaker Valley High School and Columbus College of Art and Design. Dan was employed by Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio as a senior Graphic Designer. He produced artwork for many private individuals, commercial and government entities. N.A.S.A. was one of many that valued his expertise, resulting in his being commissioned to illustrate spaceships and missions of the space agency. He illustrated programs and a monthly magazine to improve workers and hygiene on the job and at home. He was awarded many awards, to name a few seven STC, four IABC, and International Association of Business Communicators, N.A.S.A. project, three Battelle project team awards, six coins and two pins on various defense contracts. Dan is also renowned in Columbus, Ohio, and will live on in the hearts of all Buckeye fans, for the huge mural that is a focal point and welcomes all visitors to the Ohio Stadium at Ohio State University. He was dynamic and successful in his professional career and also in his personal life. Dan had a zest for life and was always the center of the party. His creativity was not limited to his artwork - it carried over in how he lived his life, and his interactions with friends, family and complete strangers. He was ardent and vocal in his support of the Pittsburgh Steelers - at all times! A talented athlete, Dan competed well in baseball and softball during his youth. LOUGHREN JOAN MEISNER Joan, known to most people as Joanie, died peacefully Monday, December 16, 2013, in New Smyrna, Florida. Joanie grew up in Mount Lebanon and graduated from Mount Lebanon High School in 1974. Following the career path of her father and mother, Joanie attended Ohio Northern University, where she received her pharmacy degree. She returned to Pittsburgh and worked with her parents, Jim and Gloria Meisner, at Meisner's Pharmacy in Bethel Park. She loved to ski at Seven Springs, which she often did with her father. Eventually, the warm weather beckoned and she moved to Florida, where she married, and raised her daughter, Christina Loughren. Joanie loved watching the Steelers play and Sidney Crosby skate. Her favorite Pittsburgh spots were Mineo's Pizza and Freddie's in Bethel Park. Joanie's sunny disposition throughout her life was a delight to all she met. Joanie is survived by her adored daughter, Christina Loughren of Tampa, Florida; her mother, Gloria Meisner of Gibsonia, PA; sister, Lorene (Meisner) Smith and her husband, Bill of New Smyrna Florida; and brother, Dennis Meisner, M.D., and his wife, Susan and their children Robert, Stephen, Lauren, and Katherine. MALINAUSKA LYDIA ELLA Age 86, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2013, in Oakmont, PA. She was born in Argentina in May 1927. Lydia earned two nursing degrees, one in Argentina, and the other in the U.S. During her studies in the U.S., she became a naturalized American citizen. For more than 30 years, she worked as a registered nurse at the VA Hospital in Northport, NY, and lived in Huntington, NY. After she retired from her nursing career, Lydia moved to New England and later to the Pittsburgh area. She was an avid domestic and world traveler, visiting every continent except Australia. She was fluent in five languages, and knew phrases in several others. Among her favorite travels in the U.S. were several river steamboat excursions. She strongly supported our veterans and troops, and was a steadfast advocate for animals. Lydia went to Kenya, Africa on a no-kill safari to a wild animal sanctuary, and visited the remote Galapagos Islands to see the pristine environment and undisturbed wildlife. Lydia is survived by her beloved sister, Tatiana Malinauskas of Buenos Aires, Argentina; niece, Cynthia (Everett) Joyce, and her husband, Glenn J., of Crescent, PA; nephew, Bruce Everett, and his wife, Mary, of Bolton, MA; two grandnieces, Kayla Everett and Roberta Everett, of Bolton, MA; relatives in Detroit, MI; and many friends throughout the U.S. She was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio and Augusta (Maciulaityte) Malinauska; and her sister, Olga (Malinauskas) Everett. JANSSEN JEROME JERRY Passed to his heavenly reward on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, after a brief illness. He was a patient at Mercy Hospital University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Born on May 5, 1928, in Appleton, WI, the second of six children born to Henry Janssen and Rose Obarski Janssen. After graduation from 8th grade at St. Therese School, he entered the Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary in Worthington, Ohio. Upon returning to Wisconsin, he completed his undergraduate degree at St. Norbert College, De Pere. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as a 2nd Lieutenant. Returning to civilian life, Jerry earned his MA degree and pursued a doctorate degree in history from UW-Madison. He was employed as a professor of history with the UW-Extension system at various locations: Green Bay, Marinette and Menasha. Jerry accepted a position in the history department at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, as a professor of history. After 40 years, he retired from Duquesne, but continued to hold an interest in his field of study. Jerry was a kind gentle soul, who always wanted to help those less fortunate. He made regular trips to Wisconsin during the summer and at Christmas time, driving all night after midnight Mass, with his sister to the family Christmas party in Wisconsin. He always had a dog or two as pets and walked them in the woods along the trolley tracks near his home. Pittsburgh was his home, where he put down roots, sang in the St. Basil Choir and regularly attended the Pittsburgh symphony. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Henry Janssen; brother, Rev. Orville Janssen; brothers-in-law, Glenn Moder (Novella Janssen) and Dr. Guy T. Barry (Therese Janssen). Jerry is survived by sisters, Therese and Novella; brothers, David Janssen (Mary) and Thomas Janssen (Diana); and 13 nieces and nephews. A funeral service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W Pine St., Appleton, WI.
