THOMAS PAUL NOWALK Age 88, formerly of Greensburg, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2020, with his devoted children around him in body and in spirit. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lourdes Woehl Nowalk. He was the son of Joseph and Catherine Healy Nowalk; and brother of Mary Kathleen Till and Francis Nowalk. His surviving family also includes his seven children and their families: Isabelle (Martin) Moldovan, Samuel, Nathaniel and Jesse; Thomas (Xiao Hong), Sarah Meng Yi and Teresa Tian Yi; Catherine (James) Shea, Daniel, Thomas and Jack; Mary (Charles) Mayhew; Patricia (Gregg) Mokrzycki, Haile, Finn and August; Andrew (Amy Brinkos), Max, James and Peter; and Joseph (Nancy), Anna, Mac, Laura and Casey. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family. Born February 6, 1932, in Pittsburgh, PA, Tom attended Carrick High School and St. Basil Church. He earned a full scholarship to Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he earned his Bachelor of Science cum laude in 1953. He served two years in the United States Army from 1955-1957 and in the Army Reserves until 1963. Tom worked as a semiconductor engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation and its subsidiaries for 40 years. His work led to involvement in 11 patents and numerous technologies which advanced the field of power semiconductor and microchip technology. Tom married the love of his life, Lourdes, in 1960. They celebrated 57 years of loving marriage before her passing in 2017. He was known throughout his work and parish community as a man of faith and kindness, and goodwill towards all. His greatest accomplishment was providing a warm and loving home for his family and many friends. He drew tremendous strength and inspiration from his Roman Catholic faith, which he shared with all through his generous spirit, kind words, and devotion to his community. His greatest joy was found in celebrations in his home with his family, the bigger the better. In his work and home life, to know him was to love him. When dementia took his memory, his kindness and good humor remained, and his songs and spirit brightened the lives of staff and residents at Sunrise Senior Living in Upper St. Clair and Prime Time Adult Care in Bethel Park over the last few years. The family thanks both centers for their devoted care of our dear father. Due to the current need for safety, visitation, Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be private. Arrangements entrusted to the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Prime Time Adult Care, Inc. at 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102 for providing Tom a daily social outlet that enhanced his independence and quality of life for many years.
