SCHOENEBERGER LARRY M. Age 63, of Buffalo Twp., passed away in the arms of his family at his home on Saturday, December 30, 2017, while in the company of family. Larry was born in Nazareth, PA on January 5, 1954. He was the son of Delores (Fox) Schoeneberger, of Nazareth, PA and the late John C. Schoeneberger, Sr. Larry graduated from Bucknell University in 1975 with his bachelor's degree in accounting. He was also a "Kodak All-American" linebacker on the Bucknell Football team and a member of the Bucknell Sports Hall of Fame. Larry was the Vice President of Finance for GENCO in Blawnox. He had worked for the company for the past 31 years and just retired in 2015. Larry enjoyed the outdoors, animals, hiking, gardening and was an avid reader. He loved to spend time with his family and especially his two grandsons. Larry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janice (Owens) Schoeneberger; two sons, Kurt C. Schoeneberger, of Buffalo Twp., Erich J. and Lindsay Schoeneberger, of Buffalo Twp.; and a daughter, Kristen L. Schoeneberger, of Morgantown, WV; his two grandsons, Lukas and Levi Schoeneberger. Larry is also survived by his three sisters, Sheila and Keith Fogel, of Walnutport, PA, Linda and Todd Kaplan, of Allentown, PA, Lisa and Scott Palochik, of Nazareth, PA; two brothers, John C. and Kathie Schoeneberger, Jr. of Nazareth, PA, Terry Schoeneberger, of Nazareth, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 6-8 p.m. and on Wed., January 3, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the REDMOND FUNERAL HOME, INC., 524 High St. in Freeport, PA. Everyone is asked to gather at St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport for the funeral service that will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018, with Father Ronald Maquinana, officiating. HODGDON THOMAS G. III Age 78, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2017, at Heritage Crossings, a caring and loving community, in Jacksonville, FL. From his birth in Pittsburgh, PA on April 8, 1939, to Thomas G. and Bernice (Cruikshank) Hodgdon, Jr. to his death, he lived life as a great adventure. He grew up in Ben Avon Heights, PA, the oldest of two sons. Tom was a swimmer at Avonworth HS, a musician, an oarsman at Purdue University, a fisherman, sailor, outdoorsman, Steelers fan, father, and brother. Tom will be forever remembered by his children Thomas G. “Guy” Hodgdon IV of Auburn, CA, James A. (Hiromi) Hodgdon of Jacksonville, FL, and Amy B. CASTELVETER DONALD R. “CASS” Age 86, of Kennedy Twp., passed peacefully surrounded by his family on December 29, 2017. He was born December 14, 1931, to the late Joseph and Fannie Castelveter. Beloved husband for 65 years to Justine; proud father of Mark, Dale (Karen), Todd (Stephanie) and Donn (Lauren); cherished grandfather of Joshua, Amber, Vincent, Anthony, Marco, Emily, Mason, and Brandon; dear brother of Robert, and the late Louis, Patsy Castelveter, and Evelyn Andrasko. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews; and his best friend, pet Ben. He retired after 25 years with United Airlines. He was a Korean War veteran, proudly serving eight years in the U.S. Coast Guard Aviation. He was a longtime Kennedy Twp. Little League coach. He joined the Kennedy Twp. Volunteer Fire Department in 1960 and was a lifetime member, serving two years as President. He was a bartender at the Fireman's Club and participated in bingo, street fairs and parades. An avid Pittsburgh sports fan, especially the Steelers. He was a friend to all and ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. We are truly blessed to have had him in our lives and he will live forever in our hearts. DUFF JAMES Age 87, of Monroeville, beloved husband, father and 'Pap' passed away on December 29, 2017. He was the son of the late James A. Duff, Sr. and Nellie Hepler-Reid Duff. He was born and raised in Turtle Creek where he met the love of his life, Mae Shearer Duff, at the age of 15. They married at age 20 and up until her passing in January they had been together for 66 years. Their years together are a true testament of their love for each other. Those years produced the loving family of daughter, Lynne (Wayne Morrison), daughter, Sharon (Anthony Marfisi), twin daughters, Barbara (James Reber), and Susan (Joseph DiMario); and son, James III (Kortni). To his 11 grandchildren, he was their Pap and will be missed by Megan and Scott Morrison, Jessica, Jennifer and Jared Marfisi, Stephen and Jason Reber, Garrett and Austin DiMario, and Adam and Kristin Duff. Ashton. She was especially close with her niece, Trish. She was preceded in death by brothers, Edmund and Jim Strefeler. Mary Kay belonged to many organizations including AARP #2294, AOH of Pitcairn, Dravosburg American Legion Auxiliary, White Oak American Legion, and was a Renzie Senior. She retired after 30 plus years from Verizon, formerly Bell Telephone, where she was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers. SILBERMAN FREDA Died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the end of a long, beautiful life, beautifully lived. Beloved wife of the late Aaron (1993); most beloved mother of Renée Silberman (Ted Medzon) and Steven (Lynn) Silberman; cherished grandmother of Benjamin (Laura Monner), Daniel, and Nina Holt, Michael (Jill) and Ted Silberman; dearest great-grandma of Annika and Aaron Holt; and Stella Silberman; loving sister of Sidney Emerman and the late Arnold Emerman. Survived by several nieces, a nephew. Freda was a loyal friend to many, dedicated to the well-being of all whose lives she touched. She and Aaron were enthusiastic supporters of cultural life in Pittsburgh and beyond, renowned for their generosity in promoting music and musicians. With Aaron, Freda created a concert series at Rodef Shalom, the first of their ventures as “impresarios with a personal touch.” They delighted in bringing artists to the city over a period of 20 years in programs that were offered free to the public. Following Aaron's death, Freda continued their projects, which also included concert series at Allegheny College in Meadville, and at Baruch College in New York City. These gifts to a wide and intersecting population of musicians and audiences will remain a lasting testament to Freda and Aaron, their belief in the best things in life. CASTNER MARY MADELYN “MM” (GANNON) Mary Madelyn "MM" Gannon Castner, age 92, died peacefully on December 29, 2017, at Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont, PA. From her birth in Pittsburgh, on March 20, 1925, to her death she nourished her family and friends with love and faith. She was born in Squirrel Hill to Edward J.I. Gannon and Mary Dunn Gannon and was the oldest of three children. After graduating from St. Philomena's parochial school and Sacred Heart High School, MM attended the Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. MM was graduated in 1947 with a BS degree. While at Margaret Morrison, she helped to found the Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Gamma Fraternity in 1944. MM married Robert J. Castner on November 27, 1947. MM and Bob had ten children, which kept MM busy organizing school and after-school activities with the skills of an air traffic controller. MM had the gift of treating everyone as special and unique. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a leader in the Mother's Guilds at St. Philomena and Central Catholic. Once her children left the nest, MM shared her energy and warm personality by volunteering as a docent at Clayton, the Pittsburgh home of Henry Clay Frick, as well as at the Carnegie Museum of Art. MM loved to travel, organizing many vacation trips involving drives across the US or to the beach with her entire family and, later, with Bob or with friends. She especially enjoyed sharing stories of her trips to Ireland, Italy and Australia. Left to honor MM and remember her love are MM's ten children, Robert J. Castner, Jr. (Kathleen), Edward R. Castner (Nancy), William M. Castner, Michael F. Castner (Ann), Madelyn F. Castner, Lawrence V. Castner (Priscilla), John C. Castner (Jane), James G. Castner (Kelly), Mark J. Castner (Sondra), and Jeanne "Bitsy" Davis (John); 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward J. I. Gannon, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. MM was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and sister, Jeanne Gannon Alvin. MM will be remembered as a bright, shining light in the various organizations and churches she served. Victor was born in Calabria, Italy and arrived in the US at the age of six accompanied by his mother, Maria Grazia, his sister, Mary and his brother, Frank. They came to join his father, Antonio, in Pittsburgh. His parents, sister, and brother, preceded him in death. Victor was the beloved husband of Betty (Fratto) Costanzo for 61 years. Loving father of Tony (Tina) Costanzo, Patricia (Ron) Bednar and Vicki (Bill) Prion. He also leaves behind four grandchildren who brought great joy to his life, Amy Bednar, Andrew (fiancée Kacee) Bednar, Brian Bednar and Gemma Prion. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Victor was a proud member of the Armed Forces and served during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW. CASPER VALERIE J. Age 67, of Oakmont, on December 30, 2017, at Good Samaritan Hospice, Wexford. Born September 16, 1950, in Greensburg to the late Paul W. and Julia L. (Safran) Casper. Preceded in death by her loving husband, John M. Chaufty. Valerie was a Catholic School elementary teacher in CA and in the Pittsburgh Diocese for over 20 years. She enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with her family. Survivors include a sister, Anita (J.T.) Tuskan, New Kensington; two brothers, Paul (Carmen) Casper, OH and Richard (Glenda) Casper, York, PA; two nephews, Ian (Nicole) Casper, her Godson, Justin (Caitlin) Tuskan; two nieces, Julie (Greg Wagner) Tuskan and Jessica Tuskan; two great- nephews, Ralph and John Casper; a great-niece, Emma Tuskan; two brothers-in-law, James and Joseph Chaufty; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen (Marty) Weaver. She is also survived by her two cats she loved dearly, Buddy and Bella. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Jeannette area. Friends will be received Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the GIUNTA - BERTUCCI FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1509 5th Ave., Arnold, John Paul Bertucci, Owner-Supervisor. Prayers of transfer will take place Wednesday 9:30 a.m. in the Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Mt. St. Peter R.C. Church, 100 Freeport Rd., New Kensington, PA 15068.
