RODAN GERALDINE GERRY (BAER)...
RODAN GERALDINE GERRY (BAER) April 26, 1925 to February 13, 2014, teacher, home economist, and mother, Geraldine Gerry Rodan of McCandless, died peacefully in her apartment Thursday afternoon, with her family by her side. A woman of firm faith, Gerry had made clear to her family that she was ready to go and be with her Lord. A celebration of her life will be held in April at her church, St. Paul's United Methodist, 1965 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA. Her cremated remains will be interred with her husband of 49 years, WWII veteran John Jack Gifford Rodan, in Monroe, Michigan. Born in Hummelstown, PA on April 26, 1925, to Irwin and Maude Baer, Gerry had two younger brothers who survive her, Richard Dick Baer of Middletown, PA and John Jack Baer of Los Altos, CA. She married Jack Rodan on May 13, 1950, in a hometown ceremony. Prior to her marriage, she attended Juniata College and put a degree in Home Economics to good work in that field for both Westinghouse and Public Service of New Jersey. Later in life, she pursued a Master's degree in education at Glassboro State College and taught Language Arts to sixth and seventh graders for more than 20 years in Haddonfield, NJ. Gerry volunteered with Haddon Fortnightly and Girl Scouts in Haddonfield, at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe, MI, and was an active church member throughout her life. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Steve Tuell of McCandless, PA; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lois Rodan of Ypsilanti, MI; three grandsons, Sean, Anthony, and Mark Tuell; and great- grandchildren, Samantha and Katlin Dillon. Gerry's family expresses their deep appreciation to the caring staff of Sunrise of McCandless, and to AseraCare Hospice for making Gerry's final days more fulfilling and comfortable. GIPKO JOHN GIPPER On Thursday, February 13, 2014, John Edward Gipper Gipko, age 77, of Scott Twp., passed peacefully of natural causes in one of his favorite destinations, Hollywood, FL, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Marion Gilardi Gipko; and son of the late John and Pearl Boris Gipko. He is survived by his children, Mary Ellen Buzzelli, Susie Chunn, P.J. (Ellen), and Chris; he was the brother of George (Tracy) Gipko and the late Kim Haliko (Jim), and Judith Pappa; he is also survived by the joys of his life, his eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren; in addition, he is survived by his son-in-law, John Buzzelli, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was a known basketball enthusiast and was engaged in coaching, running leagues, and participation in the former Dapper Dan Roundball Classic. STEINMETZ HENRY J. HANK, Jr. 70, of Brook Park, OH, formerly of Bethel Park, died Sunday, February 16, 2014, at Holy Family Home in Parma, OH. He was born May 7, 1943, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Herscoe Steinmetz. Mr. Steinmetz was retired as an accountant with the former Massey Buick in Dormont. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a Purple Heart recipient. Surviving are his daughter, Dawn Broadway and her husband, Dennis of Parma, OH; a stepson, Stephen Columbus of Clarksville; and a granddaughter, Sara Pearl Broadway. HOFFMAN Dr. BETTY (PEIRSOL) Of Murrysville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 16, 2014. She was surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Dillworth and Emma Amsler Peirsol. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Peirsol. Dr. Betty was one of the first women to become a board certified surgeon. She was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Allegheny Medical Society, a board member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association, and an active participant in HOME (Health Outreach to the Middle East). Dr. Betty and her husband went all over the world on various medical mission trips. She taught surgery and healed the sick. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women. Many awards were given to her for her medical achievements, including "Woman of the Year" from Geneva College. Dr. Betty was one of the pioneers in the development of the Emergency Medical System of Western PA. Despite all of her medical activities, she was a tirelessly devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, Jay B. Hoffman of Murrysville; her two sons, David (Tamys) Hoffman of Seattle, WA and Daniel (Tina) Hoffman of Irwin; and six grandchildren, Andrew, Austin, Masha, Victoria, Hannah, and Alexandra. SHOEMAKER BARBARA A. 69, of Callender Ln., Chicora, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, February 16, 2014, with family from near and far by her side. Barbara was born in Conneaut Twp., Erie County, on July 25, 1944. She was the daughter of Anton and Margaret Kopczenski Neidermeyer. Soon after she was born, her parents moved to Pittsburgh where she grew up and attended school. Barbara met a United States Air Force Airman. The couple married on March 16, 1968, in Denver, Colorado. She and her husband spent the next 18 years living all over the United States and abroad. Mrs. Shoemaker lived in Virginia for 22 years, where she was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother who spent her time nurturing and caring for numerous generations of her family. Barbara was a devout catholic and a member of Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church in Chicora. Mrs. Shoemaker is survived by her husband, SM Sgt. Richard G. Shoemaker, USAF retired, of Chicora; a son and two daughters, Curtis G. Shoemaker and his wife, Sherry, Tammy A. Wooten and her husband, Donald, and Deborah A. Laskey and her husband, George; eight grandchildren, Leah, Jordon, Matthew, Nathanial, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Katherine, and Benjamin; a brother, Robert; four sisters, Francis, Margaret, Josie, and Janet; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Tony, Ronnie, and Jimmy. HERSHEY RICHARD E., M.D. Age 90, of Mt. Lebanon, on Friday, February 14, 2014. Dr. Hershey is survived by Jeanine, his beloved wife of 59 years; his daughter, Pamela of New Orleans, LA; his sister, Eleanor Jean Earnest of Greensburg; and his brother, William Hershey of Naples, Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Grace Hershey of Greensburg; and his brother, John Hershey of Aiken, South Carolina. Dr. Hershey was born in Greensburg, PA. He graduated from Mount Union College in 1944, after winning a full scholarship. He then joined the Army and rode hospital trains for two years before obtaining his medical degree in 1950 from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hershey completed his neurosurgical residency at Mercy Hospital, where he trained under the tutelage of Dr. Floyd H. Bragdon. Upon competing a neurosurgery fellowship at Boston Memorial Hospital, under Dr. Donald Munroe, he chose to return to Pittsburgh to join Dr. Bragdon's practice, Neurosurgical Associates of Pittsburgh, which later became Pittsburgh Neurosurgery and Neurology Association. He had the honor of caring for countless patients over his 30 year career. Dr. Hershey was board-certified in neurosurgery and was a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Allegheny County Medical Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine and was past president of the Mid-Atlantic Neurosurgery Society. Dr. Hershey was emeritus, senior staff at Mercy Hospital and also practiced at St. Clair Hospital, South Side Hospital, Jefferson Hospital and Washington Hospital. He served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he continued to mentor medical students after his retirement. Dr. Hershey loved Pitt football, bowling with the St. Clair Country Club men's and mixed leagues, family vacations in Florida and horse showing with his daughter. He especially enjoyed his weekly bridge games with Dr. Gene Delserone, Dr. George Pavlic, and Dr. Tim Janeway, all of whom tolerated many years of feisty behavior. The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Joseph, Dr. Robert Bragdon, and Jeff Bragdon for their friendship and support. Special thanks to Dennis.
