Husband for 12 years of Angeline (Jean Jenkins) and 49 years of the late Phyllis Macioce Ricci; father of Trudy (Rocco) Rossi, Charlie (Patti), and Eddie (Loydette); grandfather, great- grandfather, and uncle of many; survived by sister, Margaret Ricci. Preceding Ed in death were his mother and father, Leonilda and Cesidio Ricci; and siblings, Iva Rossi, Evelyn Donatelli, Charles Ricci, Mary Donatelli, and Concetta Mincin. Ed had been a lifelong member of the Ateleta Beneficial Association founded by his father, served in Germany during World War II and was very proud of his service in the U.S. Army. KUKOVICH MARTIN MARTY KING Age 98, of Greensburg, PA, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, in Greensburg Care Center. He was born in Westmoreland City, PA, the oldest of five children of the late Martin and Francis Dular Kukovich. He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Kukovich (Cook) and Albert Kukovich. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Borza) Kukovich; and stepchildren; by his son, Kenneth Martin Kukovich and wife, Sandra Lockhart of Lovettsville, VA, from his first marriage to Valentina Previc Kukovich; and by his granddaughters, Kara Kukovich of Prescott, AZ and Tess Kukovich of Arlington, VA. Additionally, he is survived by three sisters, Caroline Previc of Camp Hill, PA, Alma Woodhouse of Fenwick Island, DE, and Martha Ewing of Naples, FL; and by numerous nieces and nephews. A 1934 graduate of Norwin High School, Marty was a coal miner while still in high school and was once the youngest mine steward in the United Mine Workers. During his lifetime, he was a safety supervisor at Westinghouse in Trafford, a service manager at various auto dealerships, and manager of the Colonial Manor restaurant in North Huntingdon. Marty was a lifelong member of SNPJ Lodge 41, a 76-year member of the American Federation of Musicians, and a member of the Greater Westmoreland County Labor Council. As Marty King, he was a popular local bandleader of various bands. He subsequently played with the Frank Yankovich band for 40 years on bass and button box and, in 1986, he wrote a song on the Yankovich album, which was the first polka album to win a Grammy award. SCRUGGS OTEY M., Ph.D. After a long illness, Dr. Scruggs died on February 14, 2014, at Sherwood Oaks, Cranberry Twp., PA. He was born in Vallejo, CA on June 29, 1929. He grew up in Santa Barbara, CA, and was well-known for his athletic prowess. In 1952, he tried out for the Olympics in the Decathlon. He finished fifth in the trials, leaving him as he put it, two places from the boat. Dr. Scruggs graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1951, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1958. He taught American History at UCSB until 1965. After a stint with the Peace Corps staff in Ecuador and in Washington, D.C., he returned to UCSB. In 1969, he accepted a position at Syracuse University, and taught there until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Scruggs is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sister, Consuelo Devereaux; his son, Jeffrey; daughter-in-law, Robbin Mitchell; and grandchildren, Jack and Ava. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, and at 3:30 p.m. at Sherwood Oaks, 100 Norman Drive, Cranberry Twp., PA. McILVANE REV. DONALD W. Age 88, of Pittsburgh, on Sunday, February 16, 2014. Son of the late William and Mary (Brennan) McIlvane; brother of Mary Elizabeth McIlvane, the late Robert E. McIlvane and Roseanne Casey; also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Fr. Donald was a World War II veteran, serving on the Yale Victory Ship. After his discharge from the service, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1952, and celebrated his 60th anniversary of his ordination in 2012. His ministry took him to various parishes and chaplaincies throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 1952-1994. He became involved in interracial issues, ecumenical dialogue, labor equality and political responsibility. On March 7, 1965, he walked with Martin Luther King in the historic Selma March and in 1994 he traveled to South Africa as a documented observer of free elections and witnessed Nelson Mandela being elected as President.
