CASSLER DONALD E. Age 83, of Pittsburgh, PA, died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born October 11, 1931, to the late Austin E. and Mary C. (Currie) Cassler in Somerset, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene G. (Glessner) Cassler, whom he married on September 9, 1956; his sister, B. Joyce (Cassler) Bittner of Harrisburg, PA; and a granddaughter, Samantha K. Cassler. He is survived by a son, William H. (Sharon) Cassler of Cambridge, OH; a daughter, Ann E. Cassler of Pittsburgh, PA and her fiancé, Jim Stewart; two grandsons, Joshua C. Ribeiro of Richmond, VA and Donald J. Cassler of Columbus, OH; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends, including his best friend, Mark Vinski of Pittsburgh, PA. He is also survived by his beloved cat, Tippy. Don was a graduate of Somerset High School (Class of 1949) and the University of Pittsburgh (cum laude) with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. He was a U.S. Army combat veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict as a non-commissioned officer in the 1st Cavalry Division. He was a member of the F&AM Cambria Lodge No. 278. He also served as the borough manager of Somerset from 1958 through 1961. He was a civil engineer by profession and was a consultant for KLH Engineers for many years beyond his retirement. Don was well-known for his model railroad, which was featured in several magazines, television segments and a video series, as well as receiving visitors from all over the world. He enjoyed a great number of friends within the hobby. Additionally, a keen interest in history prompted Don to pen the "One Hundred Years Ago Today" series, providing unique insights into Civil War history. He was also an expert on the Pacific Theater of World War II, giving talks and presentations on a number of different battles between the United States and Japan. Two Memorial Services will be held. The first will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Somerset, PA. The second will be at Don's home in Pittsburgh on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at 2 p.m. Interment will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2015, in Somerset Memorial Park.
