Marylee was born and raised in Sharpsburg, the daughter of the late Matthew T. and Nellie (Kammer) Walker. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Verona. Marylee will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. She will also be remembered for her devotion and the pride she had for her grandsons. HENDERSON GARY WAYNE Of East Liberty, passed away unexpectedly, on January 14, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on June 26, 1944. He was the son of the late George and Alice Henderson. Gary was a 1963 graduate of Peabody High School, where he earned all city honors in baseball and basketball. He received an athletic scholarship to Wichita University in Wichita, KS. He also attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. He was employed by Allegheny Housing Authority and Allied Barton Security. He also participated in local politics, running for Mayor twice in 1989 and 1993, and serving as a Committeeman for over 20 yrs. Gary was an avid reader, and participated in the Senior Olympics at the Senior Center in East Liberty. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, George, Sr. and Alice Henderson; his brothers, Robert Lee, John Charles, and George Jackson, Jr.; and a sister, Minnie Mae. Gary leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Maria Pryor of Greensboro, NC; one brother, Anthony Henderson (Darlene); two sisters-in-law, Clara Henderson and Jean Henderson; and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. MITCHELL CLAIR E. 86, of Cabot, formerly of Wilkinsburg, passed away on January 16, 2014, at the Butler VA Medical Center. Born February 18, 1927 in Dayton, PA, he was the son of James M. and Alda Byerly Mitchell. Clair served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Italy. He had worked as a Sales Manager for Kress Tire in Pittsburgh. Surviving are his wife, JoAnne Mitchell of Saxonburg; his children, George Robert Mitchell of Cabot, Daniel W. (Loretta) Mitchell of Valencia, and Donna Lee Mitchell of Butler; seven grandchildren, Tina, R.C., Ryan, David, Drew, Chris, and Ben; and two great-grandsons, Alex and Nathan. HAMPERS HELEN G. On Thursday, January 16, 2014, Helen G. Hampers. Beloved daughter of the late George and Pipina Hampers; sister of the late Bess Lambrou, Constantine G. Hampers, and Elizabeth Filges; aunt of Peter J. Lambrou, M.D., George J. Lambrou, Patricia Raphael, George Dardoufas, Christopher Dardoufas, and George Filges; also survived by two generations of great-nieces and nephews, including Julie M. Lambrou, Katherine B. Coan, and Christine M. Lambrou. Helen was a dedicated and active member of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Oakland for more than 60 years. In that time, she served as President and Treasurer of Philoptochos, St. Nicholas' philanthropic women's organization. Helen helped organize the first Pastoral Committee visiting hospitalized and homebound parishioners. When the country was going through rough economic times, Helen organized contributions to the Food Bank on behalf of St. Nicholas. She was a key volunteer and organizer for the church's annual food festival, serving as the Chairperson for Pastitso and known for making the best tasting loukoumathes. Helen was a dedicated third grade Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a master seamstress, teaching at the Clarissa School of Sewing and known for creating numerous costumes, aprons, and robes worn to this day by St. Nicholas members in various church activities. In 2009, Helen was honored for her decades of service to the church with a lifetime achievement award signed by Bishop Maximos. Acknowledged by many as “Aunt Helen,” she was a spiritual person, humble, kind, and genuine. She leaves a legacy of love, warmth, and compassion, virtues that she embodied by the way she lived.
