ZURAW VICTOR WILLIAM Educator, environmentalist, skeptic, and friend for life, died early Friday morning, December 21, 2018, at the Donnell House. He was 86 years old. Vic was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, in 1932, the son of Russian immigrants, and the youngest of seven children. He was the ?rst in his family to go to college, earning both B.S. and M.Ed. degrees (from Thiel College and Duquesne University, respectively).   He was a dedicated and loving educator for 50 years, sharing his endless sense of wonder and joy with chemistry and physics students from Long Beach City College, Greenville High School, the University School, Baldwin High School (where he met his wife of 55 years, Maggie), and ?nally Upper St. Clair High School, where he taught for 34 years, including 13 years as department chair. He periodically took the role of vice principal at Upper St. Clair, but wanted nothing more than to be in class with his students, whose love of learning and self-respect he was committed to fostering. Each day of class began with the same question: “Ladies and gentlemen, may we begin?”   Vic was an avid environmentalist, creating Upper St. Clair's ?rst recycling program in the 1970s. He was a scientist in mind and spirit, a skeptic who insisted on reasoned answers while always retaining a sense of humility in the face of a great and unknowable universe. And he was a gentle and generous soul. In the military, Vic the paci?st was trained to shoot a ri?e, but vowed never to use one, and so found his way into a dentistry unit and a caregiving role. Being in the military took him to a base in Germany, from where he traveled Europe and discovered his lifelong love of classical music (and beer).   Vic was a longtime March of Dimes volunteer, a Facilitator for Pittsburgh PFLAG and The Compassionate Friends, and a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church, 1793, in Washington. Upon retirement, he taught science to elementary education teachers for 10 years through the organization Asset. Also in retirement, he and his wife Maggie bought and restored the 200-year-old historic William Wolf property in Wolfdale where he demonstrated his formidable carpentry skills and relentless energy, as he and Maggie transformed and cared for the 10-acre property.   Left behind are his wife of 55 years, Maggie; ?rst wife, Nancy; children, Vicki (Kim), Pete (Zandra), Mike (Elizabeth), and Julie (Fegens); grandchildren, Calvin, Quinn and Luca; and many friends. Preceding him in death were his daughter, Cathy; and siblings, Nicholas, Peter, Ann, Walter, Olga, and Jane.   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at the BEINHAUER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2828 Washington Rd., McMurray, PA 15317. Visitation will take place at 10 a.m, before the service. Lunch will be available afterward at noon and all are welcome to join.   In lieu of ?owers, please consider a donation to Citizens Library, 55 South College St., Washington, PA 15301 or give generously to your own favorite charitable organization.   May Vic's extraordinary kindness and love be carried forward by all of us.   Please view or add tributes at: www.beinhauer.com Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

LIGONS FRANK JOSEPH Passed away peacefully on Dec. 14, 2018 at the age of 80. By his side were his beloved children and devoted wife of 47 years. Frank was born on Nov. 13, 1938 to the late Katherine Stokes and Frank Douglas Ligons in Pittsburgh, PA. While attending Duquesne University on a Music Scholarship to obtain his Music Education Degree, Frank became the ?rst African-American to sing in our Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. Frank's unforgettable voice and handsome smile out-maneuvered racial barriers at The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in the 1950s, paving the way for his starring role in the Broadway hit "West Side Story." After receiving his Music Education Degree, Frank taught in the Pittsburgh Public School System, K-12, for 40 years. His singing and entertainment talent assisted in teaching students everything from music fundamentals to the art of public performance. Frank was a dedicated teacher throughout his career and won a "Gold Medal " for his production of a "Patriotic Tribute To Honor Our Country." For this award, and many other notable achievements, Frank insisted on sharing the spotlight with his students who inspired him. During the day Frank taught music, but at night he "Rocked The City" with his partner, Joseph Kennedy III. Together their music was nothing short of MAGICAL and they became well-known as the "Dynamic Duo." Frank frequently hailed Joe as the ?nest pianist, composer, and friend you could ever hope to ?nd. Joe was always one of the people Frank treasured most along his path in life. Their show name was Kennedy & LaVelle and these "Hotshots" were the most sought-after Duo in Pittsburgh for decades after beginning their musical journey on the second ?oor of The Encore in Shadyside. The legacy of Kennedy & LaVelle remain in the hearts of all their patrons and friends who frequented their shows night after night. These lifelong fans continue to share memories of Kennedy & LaVelle's impact on the Pittsburgh Music Scene. When it was time for the the Duo to "hang up their hats," and Frank retired from teaching, he began singing full time in senior citizen facilities all over the city. In this era, he was often called "The Music Man" and was known to spark a side of the residents through song that no other entertainer could. Even with singing at over 250 facilities for over 15 years, his energy never waned. He continued in his unique gift of bringing great joy to all he encountered. The last two years of his life, he sang on the city streets of downtown Pittsburgh, craving the passion and interaction with the public that marked his early career. He became a beloved sight and sound to behold on our city streets and was given the the title of "The Rarest Treasure In Pittsburgh." From start to ?nish, he was an esteemed local celebrity with the voice that will resonate forever. Whether you know him as Frank Ligons or Frank LaVelle, he was a ?ne man to never be forgotten. As a husband and father, he loved unconditionally, worked tirelessly to be a good provider and set an extraordinary example of serving others. Above all else, he would want to be known for his love of Jesus Christ. Frank is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Baker Ligons; son, Douglas Ligons, and daughter-in-law, Tanita Ligons; son, Frank M. Ligons; daughter, Marcie B. Pan, and son-in-law, Allen Pan; and grandsons, Jalani, Akili, Bodie Ligons and Hunter Pan; also, sister, Douglena Spencer; brother, James Ligons; sisters, Claudia Clark, Sharon Ligons; sister-in-law, Beverly Lowe; and brother-in-law, Clay Lowe; and a host of relatives, friends, fans, and former students. There will be "A Celebration Of Life Memorial Service" for Frank in the Spring of 2019. Details to be announced. If in your lifetime Frank ever touched your heart... please join us in the Spring when we celebrate a life well lived. In lieu of ?owers, the family encourages memorial contributions sent to The St. Jude Children's Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Place in Memphis, TN 38105.
